Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Department: Marketing & Communications
Location: Yellowhead Tribal College, Edmonton, Alberta
Reports To: Senior Administration, Yellowhead Tribal College
Works In Conjunction With: Yellowhead Tribal Council Communications
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Posting Date: June 2026

About Yellowhead Tribal College:

Established in 1986 by the Yellowhead Tribal Council, Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC) is a First Nations post-secondary institution committed to academic excellence and life-long learning while preserving and promoting First Nations culture, languages, and traditions. YTC serves its member Nations — Alexander First Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, O'Chiese First Nation, and Sunchild First Nation — as well as the broader Indigenous community, delivering accredited career programming in fields including business, education, Indigenous social work, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous governance. Our vision is to be a leader in First Nations education in Canada, grounded in student success, academic excellence, and Indigenous curriculum.

Position Summary:

Yellowhead Tribal College is seeking a Marketing and Communications Coordinator to tell the YTC story and grow awareness of our programs across our member Nations and the wider community. This is a relationship-driven, on-the-ground role: you will get out into the communities we serve, build trust with prospective students and schools, and work side-by-side with current students to capture authentic stories of life at YTC.

This position reports directly to Senior Administration at YTC and works in ongoing collaboration with the Yellowhead Tribal Council Communications function. The Coordinator serves as the day-to-day bridge between the College and the Council's communication efforts — aligning messaging, marketing processes, and brand presence so that YTC and the Council speak with one clear, consistent voice. The right candidate is a social, outgoing storyteller who is as comfortable in a community hall as behind a camera or a content calendar.

Working in Collaboration with the Yellowhead Tribal Council:

  • Coordinate communications and marketing processes between the College and the Yellowhead Tribal Council so that both organizations are aligned in message, timing, and brand.

  • Act as the day-to-day bridge between YTC and the Council's communication efforts — sharing plans, calendars, and assets, and ensuring College activity is reflected accurately in Council channels and vice versa.

  • Help bring communications closer to the real student and academic activity happening at the College, while respecting the Council's leadership, governance role, and community relationships.

  • Support a unified voice across joint campaigns, community announcements, and milestone moments such as YTC's 40th Anniversary.

WHO YOU ARE — A SOCIAL, OUTGOING STORYTELLER

  • At heart, you are a storyteller and a people person. You light up when you are out meeting people, and you have a gift for turning everyday moments into stories that make others want to belong. You bring:

  • A natural connector. You build genuine relationships quickly with students, families, school staff, community leaders, and Council partners.

  • A storyteller's eye. You notice the human moment — the first day, the cultural ceremony, the graduation — and know how to share it authentically.

  • An outgoing, on-the-road energy. You enjoy travelling to communities, showing up in person, and representing YTC with warmth and professionalism.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Outreach & Recruitment

  • Lead proactive community outreach to prospective students and to schools across our member Nations and surrounding communities, building awareness of YTC programs and pathways.

  • Travel regularly for community visits, school presentations, recruitment events, career fairs, and Council-hosted gatherings to represent the College in person.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with school counsellors, community education staff, and Band offices to keep YTC top-of-mind for prospective learners.

Authentic Student Storytelling — "Life at YTC"

  • Collaborate directly with current students to co-create authentic "life at YTC" content — short videos, photos, takeovers, and testimonials that show the real student experience.

  • Capture and share stories of culture, community, and student success that reflect YTC's identity as a First Nations institution.

  • Build a library of genuine, student-voiced content that fuels recruitment, social media, and community reporting throughout the year.

  • Manage the Student Content Submission intake process, including the monthly $25 gift-card draw program — ensuring consent, fairness, and inclusive participation.

Marketing, Content & Brand

  • Plan and deliver day-to-day marketing across social media, website, print, and email, maintaining a consistent 12-week content calendar approved by Senior Administration.

  • Safeguard and apply YTC's visual identity and brand standards across all materials, in alignment with Council branding where campaigns are shared.

  • Support recruitment and institutional campaigns, including the 40th Anniversary and enrolment drives, from concept through to publication.

  • Manage the Thursday Spotlight Series — short-form video reels highlighting students, programs, culture, and community moments.

  • Support the College podcast relaunch in collaboration with FAVA and the Alberta Film School.

  • Track engagement and outcomes, and report on what is working to inform future communications planning.

Departmental Coordination & Intake

  • Manage the Departmental Request Form — the single intake point for all marketing and communications requests from YTC departments, with a 6-week lead time standard.

  • Keep the content calendar visible and up to date, flagging conflicts or resource gaps to Senior Administration early.

  • Coordinate job posting approvals through the established review process with Council Communications before any posting goes public.

‍ ‍

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

‍ ‍

  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Demonstrated experience in marketing, communications, social media, or content creation, including photography/videography and storytelling.

  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills, with the confidence to engage diverse audiences in person.

  • Knowledge of, and respect for, First Nations cultures, communities, and protocols; lived experience or prior work with Indigenous communities is a strong asset.

  • A valid Alberta driver's licence and willingness to travel to member Nation communities; flexibility for occasional evening and weekend events.

  • ‍ ‍Proficiency with social media platforms, standard content/design tools, and basic digital reporting.

  • ‍ ‍Comfort working with intake systems, content calendars, and structured workflows.

‍ ‍

WORKING CONDITIONS

‍ ‍

This role is based at YTC's Edmonton campus (the Orange Hub, 10045 156 Street NW) and combines office-based content work with regular travel to member Nations and partner communities. Some events take place outside standard business hours. The Coordinator reports directly to Senior Administration at YTC and works in day-to-day collaboration with Yellowhead Tribal Council Communications.
