Program Description
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a nationally recognized method to obtain college/university credit for the knowledge and skills individuals achieve through life experiences. The PLAR process credits or certifies individuals for skills and knowledge gained through experiential learning. The benefits of PLAR are:
- Formally recognized skills and knowledge gained through work and life experience
- Promotion of education
- Decreased length of time required to complete a post-secondary program
- Assistance in the development of career and educational goals
- A response to the unique educational needs of YTC members and their communities
- Career Advancement
What is the PLAR Process?
An application/interview process will determine if PLAR is for you. Successful applicants will attend the PLAR portfolio course offered in January 2009 which will: provide students with the tools to demonstrate their skills, competency, and knowledge learned through informal training, work, and life experience; provide students with the skills to verify prior learning equivalent to post-secondary course(s) or programs; aid students in developing a portfolio to assist in personal growth; recognize a First Nation model of education.
Admission Requirements
Open admission with a completed career investigation.
Bursaries and Awards
Students demonstrating financial need may be eligible for a Yellowhead Tribal College Access Bursary.
Course Description
This course will be based on a First Nations model of education that includes:
- Storytelling
- Songs
- Traditional Practices
At the end of the course you will:
- Receive 3 course credits towards a YTC program
